Math — BC's curriculum, in teaching order

British Columbia math runs as a sequence: each unit builds on the one before it. The week ranges below follow the school year from September; teachers vary pacing.

Squares, Cubes and Roots

Weeks 1–6 · September–October

Perfect squares and cubes and square and cube roots, using prime factorization and estimation.

Proportional Reasoning and Percents

Weeks 7–12 · October–November

Percents less than 1 and greater than 100, and numerical proportional reasoning with rates, two- and three-term ratios, proportions, and percent.

Operations with Fractions

Weeks 13–19 · November–January

Adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions with order of operations using brackets (no exponents).

Linear Relations, Expressions and Equations

Weeks 20–26 · January–February

Discrete linear relations extended to larger integers, writing and evaluating expressions using substitution, and two-step equations with integer coefficients, constants, and solutions.

Worth watching: linear relationships are the front door to high-school math. Comfort with "what happens to y when x grows?" matters more than speed.

Surface Area and Volume

Weeks 27–32 · March–April

The surface area and volume of regular solids including triangular and other right prisms and cylinders.

Pythagorean Theorem and 3D Objects

Weeks 33–38 · April–May

Modelling and applying the Pythagorean theorem to find a missing side of a right triangle, and constructing, viewing (top, front, side), and building nets of 3D objects.

Data, Probability and Money

Weeks 39–43 · May–June

Central tendency (mean, median, mode), theoretical probability with two independent events using sample space, and best buys using unit price and proportional reasoning.

The exchange of goods, ideas, arts, and culture between civilizations — the Silk Road, Indian Ocean trade, the Crusades, and the Columbian Exchange; where exchanges also brought conflict or disease, treat it honestly at a general level and from multiple perspectives, without graphic detail.

Exploration, Expansion, and Colonization

Weeks 28–35 · March–April

The age of exploration, expansion, and colonization and how it connected and changed different parts of the world; include honestly and respectfully that colonization had serious and unequal consequences for many peoples — especially Indigenous peoples of the Americas — at a general, understanding-focused level and from multiple perspectives, without graphic detail or trauma specifics.

Population and Living Standards

Weeks 36–43 · May–June

How populations and living standards changed in this period — the movement of peoples, growth of cities, and changes in health; include honestly and respectfully that some migration was forced and caused great suffering (such as enslavement and displacement), acknowledged at a general, age-appropriate level and centring the humanity and resilience of those affected, without graphic detail or statistics of suffering.

English & French — skills that build weekly, not units

How language works in Grade 8
