Math — BC's curriculum, in teaching order

British Columbia math runs as a sequence: each unit builds on the one before it. The week ranges below follow the school year from September; teachers vary pacing.

Operations with Integers

Weeks 1–6 · September–October

Adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing integers with order of operations using brackets (no exponents).

Worth watching: negative numbers feel like a trick until the number line becomes second nature. Watch for "-3 minus 5 = 2"-style sign slips.

Adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals with order of operations using brackets (no exponents).

Discrete linear relations using expressions, tables, and graphs, two-step equations with whole-number coefficients and solutions, and Cartesian coordinates and graphing.

Weeks 27–32 · March–April

The circumference and area of circles, developing C = π × d and A = π × r × r from the relationship between radius, diameter, and circumference.

Volume and Transformations

Weeks 33–38 · April–May

The volume of rectangular prisms and cylinders (area of base × height) and combinations of transformations across four quadrants including tessellations.

Data, Probability and Money

Weeks 39–43 · May–June

Constructing and interpreting circle graphs, experimental probability with two independent events, and financial percentage calculations such as sales tax, tips, and discounts.

The origins, core beliefs, narratives, and influences of religions, including at least one indigenous to the Americas, along with the scientific, philosophical, and technological developments of ancient cultures.

Trade, Exchange, and Ancient Societies

Weeks 36–43 · May–June

Interactions and exchanges between past civilizations — conflict, peace, trade, expansion, and migration — and their social, political, legal, governmental, and economic systems, including at least one indigenous to the Americas.
