Math — BC's curriculum, in teaching order

British Columbia math runs as a sequence: each unit builds on the one before it. The week ranges below follow the school year from September; teachers vary pacing.

Weeks 1–6 · September–October

Place value and operations from thousandths to billions, order of operations with whole numbers using brackets (no exponents), and factors and multiples including greatest common factor and least common multiple.

Measuring and classifying angles (straight, acute, right, obtuse, reflex) and classifying triangles by sides and angles (scalene, isosceles, equilateral; right, acute, obtuse).

Perimeter, Area and Volume

Weeks 33–38 · April–May

The perimeter of complex shapes, the area of triangles, parallelograms, and trapezoids, and volume and capacity.

Transformations, Data and Money

Weeks 39–43 · May–June

Combinations of transformations in the first quadrant of the Cartesian plane, line graphs, single-outcome probability (theoretical and experimental), and simple budgeting and consumer math.

How economies and trade connect the world — resources, imports and exports, and trade agreements — and how economic decisions can affect communities, including Indigenous peoples; told at a general level, with respect for affected communities and their perspectives, focused on understanding.

Weeks 36–43 · May–June

International co-operation and responses to global issues, regional and international conflict, and how media technologies and coverage shape understanding of current events.
