Math — the new Alberta curriculum (program of studies), in teaching order

Alberta math runs as a sequence: each unit builds on the one before it. The week ranges below follow the school year from September; teachers vary pacing.

Divisibility & Decimal Operations

Weeks 1–6 · September–October

Divisibility rules for 2 through 10; adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing decimal numbers with order of operations.

Fractions: Add & Subtract

Weeks 7–12 · October–November

Adding and subtracting positive fractions and mixed numbers with like and unlike denominators, in context.

Weeks 13–18 · November–December

Adding and subtracting integers concretely, pictorially and symbolically, including real-life contexts.

Worth watching: negative numbers feel like a trick until the number line becomes second nature. Watch for "-3 minus 5 = 2"-style sign slips.

Weeks 19–24 · January–February

Solving problems involving percents from 1% to 100%; constructing, labelling and interpreting circle graphs.

Linear Patterns & One-Step Equations

Weeks 25–30 · February–March

Representing linear patterns with expressions, tables and graphs; preservation of equality; solving one-step linear equations.

Weeks 31–36 · March–May

Radius, diameter, circumference and area of circles; area of triangles and parallelograms; the Cartesian plane and transformations.

Mean, median, mode, range and the effect of outliers; expressing probabilities of independent events as ratios, fractions and percents.

Immigration & a Growing Canada

Weeks 28–35 · March–April

Immigration and settlement following Confederation — who came to Canada, why, and how newcomers shaped communities across the West.

Canada Since Confederation

Weeks 36–43 · May–June

How Canada has changed since Confederation — the growth of provinces and evolving identities; include honestly that some government policies harmed First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities, acknowledged respectfully at a general level, centring their resilience and the ongoing work of reconciliation — no distressing specifics as quiz facts.

English & French — skills that build weekly, not units

How language works in Grade 7
